"Ashour" An Egyptian researcher is announced as the winner of the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in Life Sciences for the year 2023

Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Chairman of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, announced that Dr. Mohamed Ali Farag, Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University, won the "UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences for the year 2023" In its eighth edition, which was established by the Executive Board of UNESCO, and funded by the government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

 

Dr. Sherif Saleh, Head of the Cultural Affairs and Missions Sector and Supervisor of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, confirmed Dr. Muhammad Ali Farag has been a professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University since 2019. He has won many international awards. He is the managing editor of the Cairo University Journal for Advanced Research, and he succeeded in including it in prestigious databases that helped improve the journal’s classification, in addition to his supervision of many Scientific dissertations. He is a specialist in metabolism and one of the pioneers in this field in Africa, noting that he succeeded in evaluating changes in the composition of the metabolite present within the cell, organism or tissue.

The supervisor of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO explained that he A celebration will be held next April to honor the winners of this award on the sidelines of the Tenth African Regional Forum for Sustainable Development, noting that the National Committee and the Natural Sciences and Technology Committee, which is one of the specific committees affiliated with the National Committee, in turn nominated the researcher to UNESCO to obtain this award, which It aims to honor and promote projects and activities submitted by individuals, institutions and non-governmental organizations working in the field of life sciences; With the aim of improving the quality of human life, encouraging research, as well as enhancing cooperation between researchers and networks of centers of excellence in the life sciences, noting that the value of the award is estimated at 350,000 US dollars, to be divided among the winners.

UNESCO also stated that Dr. Mohamed Farag has developed a metabolic platform, the first of its kind, which enables scientists to monitor volatile compounds emitted by microbes for medical and agricultural applications.

UNESCO indicated that the Egyptian researcher who won this award succeeded in discovering agricultural chemicals using metabolic processes. Nutrition in identifying new biocontrol agents from soil bacteria that can enhance plant growth, in addition to his interest in analyzing herbal medicines to prove their effectiveness and study their interaction with the human body.
