It’s time for transformation – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

In Irkutsk, with the arrival of warm days, the next season of improvement will begin. The renovation is planned to be comprehensive – not only the roadways of the streets will be updated, but also sidewalks, lawns and green spaces. Photo: Press service of the Irkutsk administration

We were not mistaken when we wrote “streets” and not “roads”. Because we are talking about comprehensive repairs: not only the roadway will be put in order, but also sidewalks, fences, lawns and trees along the road. In short, they will create a comfortable environment not only for drivers, but also for pedestrians.

“For example, in Sportiv Lane, the contractor will have to uproot stumps and carry out molding pruning of trees taller than five meters, install new road signs, rebuild wells, lay new asphalt on the sidewalks and roadways, lay special tactile tiles for visually impaired pedestrians,” said the chairman of the urban improvement committee Sergey Chertkov.

Using the same principle, in 2024 in Irkutsk, as part of the “Safe Quality Roads” project, the following streets will be renovated: Leningradskaya, Malaya Roza and 20th Sovetsky Lane in the Leninsky District; Tchaikovsky, Jacobi, Sechenov, Academic in the Sverdlovsk district; Proletarskaya, Gorky, Volodarsky, Litvinov – in Pravoberezhny; section of Baikalskaya, 25th October, Trudovaya – in Oktyabrsky.

– The task that all contractors face is to complete the work efficiently and on time. And during the repair period, provide residents with convenient travel. We will carry out monitoring daily,” recalled the mayor of Irkutsk, Ruslan Bolotov.

Not only the streets, but also the city squares will be transformed. This year, under the national project “Housing and Urban Environment,” six public spaces are planned to be improved in Irkutsk. These include the shore of Ushakovka in the area of Khramtsovskaya Street, the Iris Square on Sinyushina Gora, Solnechny Boulevard, a section of Lermontov Street opposite IrNITU, and the next stage of improvement of the Jerusalem Mountain and Komsomolsky Park. They were chosen by the townspeople themselves, voting in an annual project competition.

When developing concepts, the architects took into account the wishes and interests of the residents: they learned the history of the place, provided areas for leisure of different ages – for children, for teenagers, for parents with strollers, and for the elderly. And of course, each square will have its own unique style.

For example, Iris Square did not get its name by chance. According to the stories of old-timers, these flowers once grew in abundance on the site of the microdistrict. This is how the iris motif was reflected in the concept. The park will have two playgrounds, a square with an amphitheater and a stage, walking paths, and a sports ground with exercise equipment. The center of attention, without a doubt, will be the pedestrian fountain. Jets of water will shoot out from the ground, forming an arch under which children can play.

And the Ushakovka embankment is an excellent example of the transformation of a former industrial area and vacant lots. In 2020-2023, a modern skate park, bicycle and walking paths, and lighting appeared here. This year it’s time for the neighboring plot. The bank will be strengthened, cleared of debris, fallen trees and thickets, an alley will be laid out along the river, paths and approaches to pedestrian bridges that will appear in the future will be laid. Playgrounds will be installed, including a completely unique one – with special swings and a carousel for wheelchair users.

Work will continue on Jerusalem Mount – there will be new stands dedicated to outstanding citizens buried in the Jerusalem Cemetery, and entrance groups. Komsomolsky Park in Irkutsk-II will also add new touches to its appearance. In 2022 and 2023, an Alley of Aviators, a workout area, a skate park, a path network and recreation areas were created here, lighting was installed, and a children’s playground with a rubber floor covering was installed. This will continue to include paths, pergolas, trees, lawns and flower beds.

Both the townspeople and the authorities of Irkutsk are unanimous in the opinion that such large-scale projects are very important for the city.
