Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil selected the perfect walkup song to start the new MLB season in New York City.
The Mets kickstarted their 2024 season against the Milwaukee Twins at Citi Field in Queens on Friday after rain had postponed their opening day.
McNeil revealed he is a Swiftie as he strolled up to his first at-bat to the infamous tune of one of Taylor Swift’s smash hits from her album, ‘1989’, in front of the home crowd of New Yorkers.
The 31-year-old chose ‘Welcome to New York’, the opening track of the pop megastar’s fifth studio album, to open his new season.
Naturally, McNeil’s song selection proved to be a crowd pleaser at the New York ballpark.

It marks a huge change for McNeil who had previously used ‘Rock of Ages’ for his walkup music for the entirety of his MLB career.
However, later in the game McNeil wasn’t so upbeat as he was left furious by a run-in with Twins’ Rhys Hoskins.
McNeil took exception to a late slide from the first baseman into second base which completely wiped out the Mets star.
McNeil swiftly got up and was caught on the broadcast screaming into Hoskins’ face, which was still on the floor.
The altercation caused the benches to clear but no punches were thrown and no ejections occurred as a result. Video review later ruled that it was a legal slide from Hoskins.
