Dawid Malan fears his England career is over after being snubbed for ODI and T20 tours of the Caribbean… with the 36-year-old planning to start his coaching career with Yorkshire

Dawid Malan fears his England career is over and is now planning for his post-playing future by helping to coach at Yorkshire.

The 36-year-old was England’s top run scorer in their disastrous 50-over World Cup campaign in India last autumn.

But Malan was then dropped for the subsequent ODI and T20 tours of the Caribbean despite being given a new one-year ECB contract.

The Yorkshire batsman has not spoken to any of the England management since then – and now holds little hope of being selected for their T20 World Cup defence in June.

‘I have no idea what they are thinking at the moment,’ admitted Malan. ‘I had a chat the day after the World Cup and that’s been it pretty much. We have got appraisals in 12 days, so I’ll probably find out a bit more then.

‘Obviously I know they might want to go in a different direction and that’s absolutely fine. They’re entitled to do whatever they need to do to move English cricket on in the right direction.

‘I am not looking too far ahead or wanting something that might not be there. I have made peace with that.

‘I have a different path that I am looking at in terms of the last two or three years in my career.’

Malan is England’s fourth highest T20 run scorer of all time – behind only Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales – and was ranked the world’s best batsman in the format as recently as 2021.

At last year’s 50-over World Cup, he opened the batting and scored 404 runs – 100 more than his team’s next best Ben Stokes – but has faced criticism for not being explosive enough at the start of the innings.

‘I wouldn’t say performance would have anything to do with it,’ insisted Malan when asked about being axed for the West Indies tours.

‘In 2023, I had a pretty good year in 50-over cricket and I wouldn’t say I’m old considering Jimmy Anderson is 41.

‘I can’t see it being an age thing, and there’s a tournament in a few months’ time. I still feel I’m good enough and young enough to do it, but that’s out of my control, selection-wise.’

Malan is not scheduled to play until the T20 Blast at the end of May, having announced at the end of last year that he would not play red-ball cricket this season.

In the meantime, however, he has offered to assist Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson and work with the county’s batsmen, as he starts to consider his options for after he has retired.

‘I’m going to do a bit of coaching in my off time and help the boys out two or three days a week,’ revealed Malan.

‘It’s something I suggested because I’ve been thinking for a while about what I want to do after I’m finished. This is the perfect opportunity for me to see if it’s something I’d like to do.

‘It’s an unofficial capacity. I’ll throw some balls and speak to whoever wants to speak to me about batting without treading on any of the coaches’ toes.

‘I still feel I’ve got two or three years of playing if things go well and I can still perform. But I want to give back as much as I can now. It’s exciting to give myself a different kind of challenge for this time of year.’

Malan has also not ruled out reversing his decision to not play in this year’s County Championship.

‘I still absolutely love red ball,’ he added. ‘I made the decision last year when I was looking at the schedule with the Hundred and the World Cup.

‘I’ve stuck with that but there’s part of me that wants to play and doesn’t feel done yet.

‘I might have to make a U-turn at some point on the four-day stuff, maybe next year or some point this year. I’ll see how badly that itch comes back.’
