The UAE partners with the United Nations to fund a position "Climate advisor" In Afghanistan

NEW YORK, 3 April / WAM / The UAE, as an advocate for climate, peace and security, and through its work in addressing global challenges related to climate change issues, announced a partnership with the “United Nations Climate Security Mechanism” worth 1.2 million US dollars.

The partnership stipulates an annual contribution of $600,000, provided by the state over a period of two years, which reaffirms the country’s commitment to strengthening the United Nations’ ability to address the mutual links between climate change, peace and security. The UAE is the first donor from the Global South to contribute to the climate action mechanism.

His Excellency Abdullah Al-Alaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability Affairs, said: “The UAE has always sought to address the enormous risks resulting from climate change, during its membership in the Security Council, and through its presidency of the Conference of the Parties in the UAE (COP28), in order to promote regional peace. global justice and sustainable development.

His Excellency added: “Today we are taking another important step in our commitment to proactive diplomacy and international cooperation on pressing global issues, as the partnership with the United Nations Climate Security Mechanism strengthens our support for the multilateral system, by strengthening pivotal programs for peace and climate security around the world, in addition to Funding allocated to Afghanistan’s climate advisor, to assess and mitigate real climate security risks in the country.

As part of its commitment, the state will fund the position of “Climate Advisor” in the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan, with the aim of assessing climate-related security risks and helping to develop risk management strategies and prevention mechanisms. The initiative also includes funding that is not allocated to the mechanism, which allows the use of Multi-funding to support global efforts in the field of climate, peace and security.

For his part, His Excellency Mohammed Abu Shehab, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, said: “Afghanistan is one of the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate impacts in the world, as it suffers from water shortages, floods, and other natural disasters that the country has no capabilities to manage.” Little or almost non-existent.”

His Excellency added: “We also realize that targeted policies and expanding the scope of climate adaptation measures can contribute to addressing food insecurity and reducing humanitarian needs resulting from climate change.”

His Excellency stressed that “our partnership with the Climate Security Mechanism confirms the UAE’s long-term commitment to advancing the issue of climate, peace and security, and enhancing adaptation to climate change, especially in the regions most vulnerable to climate change, in line with the country’s firm position towards stability and prosperity.” Afghanistan and its people, especially women and girls.”

In a related context, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, said: “We are pleased that the UAE is part of the United Nations Climate Security Mechanism, as this partnership pledges to make a positive impact in global initiatives related to climate, peace and security, including those relating to Afghanistan.

She added: “The commitment of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and the Mechanism, to implementing the UAE Agreement on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace issued by the Conference of the Parties (COP28) is firm and firm.”
