The United States of America denies Venezuela’s allegations of the existence of secret military bases in the Guyana region

The United States on Friday denied allegations by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that it is building secret military bases in Essequibo, an oil-rich region in Guyana that Caracas claims.

 

US National Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, said, according to Al-Hurra TV: The American newspaper said, “There are no plans to establish a secret military base,” calling on both sides to abide by the court’s ruling issued in 1899 regarding the border and to do so peacefully.

 

Venezuela President Maduro announced yesterday, Thursday , the presence of secret American military bases in the Essequibo region, describing this as aggression and preparation for escalation against Venezuela.

 

Maduro made his statements during the Venezuelan parliament’s celebration of a recently passed law that lays the foundations for the defense of Guyana. Essequibo, four months after a referendum overwhelmingly approved the creation of a Venezuelan province in the disputed region.

 

On the other hand, the Guyana Foreign Ministry described Venezuela’s move to claim Essequibo territory as a violation. It is blatant to the most basic principles of international law.
