AFL investigate Port Adelaide Power’s Jeremy Finlayson for alleged homophobic slur against Essendon Bombers player

Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson has admitted he directed a homophobic slur towards an Essendon player during the third quarter of Friday night’s clash at Adelaide Oval.

The comment was picked up on the umpire’s microphone with opposition players asking the umpire at the time whether they heard what was said, the AFL confirmed on Saturday night.

Port Adelaide said in a statement that Finlayson “made the club aware during the three-quarter time break and apologised to the victim on field after the final siren last night.

“Finlayson, who will be counselled by club leaders in the coming days, will provide a statement tomorrow.”

The club said it would now wait for the AFL’s investigation to be completed.

Earlier AFL spokesperson Jay Allen confirmed the AFL was aware of the slur and the league’s integrity unit was investigating.

“We are aware of an alleged comment made by a Port Adelaide player in last night’s match versus Essendon. We are taking this matter extremely seriously. AFLIU [the AFL integrity unit] are now investigating and we will provide an update once that investigation is completed,” he said.

Multiple players heard the slur and alerted the umpires, according to the AFL. League officials also heard the comment on the umpires’ microphone.
