If you’re a fan of the ‘Sandman’ stories and, in particular, the series adaptation that launched on Netflix in 2022, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a sister show on the way ahead of the second season in the works.
‘Dead Boy Detectives’, which as its title suggests, follows a pair of young men who investigate mysteries (and, oh yes, they are ghosts) involving demons, ghouls and other supernatural creatures.
The full trailer of the show has already appeared.
What is the story of ‘Dead Boy Detectives’?
Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency.
Teenagers born decades apart who meet only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts… who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stay together, including escaping evil witches, Hell, and Death itself.
With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson), who becomes the focus of one of the first cases, and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to decipher some of the mortal realm’s most baffling paranormal mysteries.
Who is doing ‘Dead Boy Detectives’?
As mentioned, the show adapts a part of the ‘Sandman’ comic series created by Neil Gaiman. Unlike the ‘Sandman’ series, Gaiman is not involved as showrunner on this one (yes, he is an executive producer).
Instead, the new series was developed by Steve Yockey (‘The Flight Attendant’) and is directed by Yockey alongside Beth Schwartz (‘Arrow’/’Legends of Tomorrow’). Greg Berlanti, who has one or two shows on television (well, about half of them), also produces through his company Berlanti Productions.
‘Dead Boy Detectives’: Development History
This has been a difficult show to bring to the screens. The live-action version of the characters debuted in the third episode of the third season of Max’s Doom Patrol series, ‘Dead Patrol’.
In that show, Sebastian Croft played Charles Rowland, with Ty Tennant as Edwin Payne and Madalyn Horcher as Crystal Palace.
Originally conceived as a spin-off of ‘Doom Patrol,’ the ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ series was announced in September 2021, with Yockey, who co-wrote ‘Dead Patrol,’ as showrunner. But the series descended into development limbo and was eventually shelved.
Which opened a portal for Netflix to swoop in and add him to the company’s ‘Sandman’ portfolio, which feels like an even more natural home for the series (and also allows a key character from the ‘Sandman’ show to be crossover in at least one episode).
When will ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ arrive on Netflix?
The show arrives on the streaming service on April 25, and all eight episodes will be released at once globally.
