The head of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, confirmed the explosion of a drone on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is controlled by the Russian military.

Grossi did not specify which side of the conflict launched the drone. “As IAEA experts were informed at the Zaporizhia NPP, a drone exploded at the facility today. This is consistent with our observations. I urge you to refrain from actions that contradict the five principles of the IAEA and violate nuclear safety,” it says in the message Rafael Grossi on the social network X.

The management of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, previously appointed by the occupation authorities, stated that Ukrainian kamikaze drones hit the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, including the area of the cargo port and the canteen, notes BBC Russian Service. According to Rosatom, three employees were injured, one of them seriously.

Zaporizhia NPP also claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the dome of the station’s sixth power unit. No critical damage. No threat of violation of safety limits was recorded, it is noted in telegram channel.

The Russian state corporation Rosatom emphasized on Sunday that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was subjected to an unprecedented series of drone attacks, putting the safety of the station under direct threat.

Ukraine has not yet commented on statements by Russian officials about the shelling of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.

  • Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian troops occupied the city of Energodar and the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant located nearby in early March 2022.
  • The station’s territory is periodically subjected to shelling, for which Ukraine and Russia blame each other. Ukrainian authorities also stated that the Russian army used the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant to store military equipment and station its troops.
