Higher Education: Significant support from the political leadership for the higher education system over 10 years is behind the outstanding results

Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, confirmed that the great support that the higher education and scientific research system has received over the past 10 years has resulted in raising the level of competitiveness of local educational institutions and their prominent appearance in international classifications, which today are an important indicator of ranking. Universities and achieving preference among them.

 

The issue of improving the classification of Egyptian universities, educational institutions and research centers at the international level has received great attention from the Ministry in accordance with the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research 2030, and in implementation of the directives of Political leadership, making Egypt a regional center and an attractive educational platform for students wishing to study at the level of the Arab region, the Middle East, and the African continent.

 

The latest report on the status of Egyptian universities in international classifications showed the results. The latter, which reflects significant and notable progress in the ranking of Egyptian universities and educational institutions in various international classifications that enjoy a distinguished reputation and international appreciation. The results were as follows:

 

69 universities and research centers were included in the Semago World Classification, and the classification results indicated that 32 Egyptian universities and educational institutions appeared among the Q1 institutions, that is, within the 25% highest in the classification, and Cairo University advanced the Egyptian universities, coming in 870th place, and 18 universities were included among the Q2 institutions, meaning the highest 50% in the classification, in addition to the inclusion of 14 research institutions in the classification, led by the National Research Center.

 

79 Egyptian educational institutions were included in the January 2024 edition of the “Webometrics General” classification. This is an increase over previous years, and 6 Egyptian universities were among the top 1,000 universities in the classification, which includes 32,000 educational institutions from all over the world. Alexandria University came in first place in the overall classification for this edition, followed in the top ten by universities  (Cairo, Mansoura, Ain Shams, Mostaqbal, Zagazig, the American University in Cairo, Banha, Assiut, Al-Azhar, and Tanta).

 

The Webometrics version of reference citations also included 50. An Egyptian university, led by Mansoura University, followed by Cairo and Ain Shams Universities.

 

18 Egyptian universities were also included in the QS World Sustainability Classification for the year 2024, and 4 Egyptian universities were included among the best 20 universities in the Arab region, namely (Cairo University, Mansoura University, the American University in Cairo, and Ain Shams University), and 7 other Egyptian universities reached the list of the best thousand universities in the world, which are (Suez Canal University, Alexandria University, Banha University, Assiut University, Zagazig University, Beni Suef University, and Tanta University).

 

28 Egyptian universities were included in the Shanghai classification of scientific specializations for the year 2023, which included a ranking of the best 5,000 universities in the world, Egyptian universities appeared in 5 basic specializations, namely (natural sciences, life sciences, medical sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, and their various sub-specializations), and 7 Egyptian universities were included in the Shanghai classification, general version for the year 2023.

 15 universities were included in the general version of the QS world classification for the year 2024, which includes more than 31 thousand universities worldwide.

The number of Egyptian universities in the QS classification for Arab countries increased to 36 universities in the 2024 classification and achieved 38 An Egyptian university achieved distinguished results in the Times World Classification, out of 1,904 universities from 108 countries around the world, and the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology topped the ranking of Egyptian universities.

 As well as the inclusion of 19 Egyptian universities in the “US News” classification. For the year 2023.

13 Egyptian universities were included in the Dutch Leiden World Classification.

The QS classification for scientific specializations also showed the progress achieved by Egyptian educational institutions in many scientific specializations, and the 2014 version of the classification showed 2023, 13 Egyptian universities are included among the top 1,500 universities in the world. The ranking of Egyptian universities in scientific specializations was as follows: (1) university in statistics administration, (3) in business administration, (1) hospitality management, (5) in biology, (2) in arts and humanities, (2) in… Economics, (2) in Education and Training, (2) in Mathematics, (6) in Agriculture and Forestry, (1) in Politics, (6) in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, (9) Medicine, (3) Social Sciences, (1) In veterinary sciences, (2) in natural sciences, (3) in architecture, (2) in physics and astronomy, (1) in law, (7) in chemistry, (2) in modern languages, (1) in linguistics, ( 2) in Financial Accounting, (5) in Technological Engineering, (5) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, (2) in Chemical Engineering, (4) in Civil and Structural Engineering, (5) in Mechanical Engineering, (1) Dentistry, ( 1) Archaeology, (6) Computer Science, (4) Life Sciences, (3) Materials Science, (6) Petroleum Engineering.

Dr. indicated. Abeer Al-Shater, Assistant Minister for Technical Affairs and Supervisor of the Knowledge Bank, said that the progress of Egyptian universities and research centers in the various international classifications is due to several measures taken during the last period, the most important of which are: the technical support provided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to Egyptian universities, as well as training in international publishing, In addition to what universities do to motivate researchers with all academic degrees to publish in prestigious international journals, and the distinguished appreciations that scientific research published internationally receives in the work of scientific promotion committees, and the availability of information sources to researchers via the Internet and cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.

The importance of the role of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank in providing the huge amount of scientific resources necessary for Egyptian researchers, scientists, and decision makers in order to enhance scientific research in Egypt, and enable research institutions to become known globally, as well as contributing to improving the classification of universities, institutions, and research centers internationally, Through the efforts made by the Egyptian Universities Classification Committee team in tracking the various standards in this classification, in line with Egypt’s vision for sustainable development 2030, which aims to be an international reference in order to create a generation of Egyptian university graduates capable of making a breakthrough in all fields in Egypt.

Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, the Ministry’s media advisor and official spokesman, stated that the progress of Egyptian universities and research centers in various international classifications is due to several measures taken during the last period, the most important of which are: the technical support provided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to Egyptian universities, as well as training in International publishing, in addition to the incentives that universities do for researchers with all academic degrees to publish in prestigious international journals, the distinguished appreciation that internationally published scientific research receives in the work of scientific promotion committees, the provision of information sources to researchers via the Internet, and cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.< /p>
