Construction of the European gauge between Uzhgorod and Chop has begun

The Ukrainian state company Ukrzaliznytsia has begun construction of the European gauge track Chop-Uzhgorod. This is part of the strategic program for the development of railways for the integration of Ukraine into the EU, the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia reported.

As stated by the head of the company, Evgeniy Lyashchenko, the construction project involves the construction of a 22-kilometer rail track of European standard. Engineering support networks will be reconstructed, writes publication “Economic Truth”.

The implementation of the project will make it possible to open direct passenger routes along the European track from Uzhgorod to European countries. In Uzhgorod, it will be possible to change from trains from Ukrainian regions to trains from European countries in order to continue traveling in a westerly direction.

According to Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal, the Eurogauge “Chop-Uzhgorod” will allow the opening of direct railway communication with the regional center of Transcarpathia and Vienna, Bratislava, Kosice, Budapest, Prague, Bucharest, Dresden and Belgrade.
