Food safety during the Olympics: the government plans to carry out 100,000 checks this year

The government intends to strengthen the food security of the host country in the run-up to the Olympics and plans to carry out 100,000 checks this year, almost double compared to 2023, according to information from France Inter, Friday April 12.

During the Games period, approximately 13 million meals will be distributed at Olympic Games venues, including five million to spectators and tourists. To prevent the spread of food diseases and thus avoid tarnishing the image of France, the country of gastronomy, the new health police will increase controls in restaurants and bakeries in particular. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty promises to control all establishments handling food around the test sites.

Note that since January 2024, the ministry manages all health controls, from production to distribution through processing. This unique food health police has been reinforced by around thirty additional agents since the start of the year and 1,500 checks have already been carried out in Ile-de-France. During the Games they will be helped by specialized companies
and, in turn, the laboratories will receive around ten people as reinforcements to analyze doubtful samples as quickly as possible.

For Pascal Mousset, president of the Ile-de-France hotel and restaurant group, the multiplication of controls is not necessary: “We are professionals, we didn’t wait for the Olympics to do our job well”he assures. To mark the start of the new health policy, Minister Marc Fesneau is going this Friday to Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis) to a Games competition site, to a restaurant with health controllers.
