Monte-Carlo: Jannik Sinner tames Holger Rune and joins Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final

All in serenity. Jannik Sinner (2nd) never lost the thread in his fight against Holger Rune (7th), ending up winning this showdown in three sets and almost three hours of play (6-4, 6-7, 6 -3), Friday April 12 in the quarter-final of the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo. Faced with a nervous opponent, taken in by the public, but mentally strong enough to snatch the second set in the tie-break, the Italian showed himself to be the most consistent.

The world number 2 continues his momentum. With excellent service (79% of points won on his throw) and dazzling regularity (only 11 unforced errors over the three sets), Jannik Sinner did not waver. The Italian never gave up his serve, only losing the second set due to the impressive level of play of his opponent in the tie-break.

But Holger Rune did not last the distance, declining physically in the third set after more than three hours spent on court against Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday (7-6, 3-6, 7-6). Jannik Sinner will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final.

As in the round of 16 against Alexander Zverev (7-5, 7-6), Stefanos Tsitsipas was solid and consistent to dismiss Karen Khachanov in two sets (6-4, 6-2), Friday April 12, and qualify for the final four of the Monaco tournament. As the days go by, Stefanos Tsitsipas finds his best tennis and the last four of a Masters 1000 since the Paris-Bercy tournament in November 2023.

Since the start of 2024, the Greek has been floundering his tennis. Exited in the round of 16 of the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Masters, then upon entering the competition in Miami, Stefanos Tsitsipas fell to 12th place in the world. But the clay of Monte-Carlo worked for him. Faced with a faltering Karen Khachanov on serve (eight break points conceded), he did not have to force his talent to win. Carried by an excellent first ball (84% of points won after his first serve), the Greek played fair and took advantage of too many air gaps from his opponent, unrecognizable after his victory over his compatriot Daniil Medvedev on Thursday (6-3 , 7-5).
