Report: Hani Kamal El-Din
Former US Ambassador to Argentina, Manuel Rocha, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for espionage in favor of Cuba.
Rocha pleaded guilty to two charges, following which the verdict was issued against him.
According to the prosecution, the 73-year-old former diplomat clandestinely aided Cuba’s ruling Communist Party – during his 40-year diplomatic service, including during his tenure at the US State Department, by gathering information for them.
Reuters reports that in several meetings in 2022 and 2023 with an agent of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, who was working undercover posing as a representative of Cuban foreign intelligence, Rocha disclosed his ability to evade detection.
Rocha served in the US State Department from 1981 to 2002. He held the position of US Ambassador to Argentina from 1997 to 2000, after which he was appointed Ambassador to Bolivia and served there until 2002.
