Restaurant vouchers: payment for food shopping at the center of discussions on the new system
Used by nearly five and a half million employees, the meal voucher will be at the center of discussions on Thursday April 18 at the Ministry of the Economy. The national commission, that is to say all the representatives of employees, employers, restaurateurs and also issuers of meal vouchers, is expected there.
In 2022, the possibility of paying for all food shopping in supermarkets with meal vouchers was temporary. This boost was then extended until next December, but it is now time to decide: for or against this system in mass distribution? Restaurateurs, bakers and caterers are opposed to it and denounce a misuse of the system.
Employees now spend 36% of their meal vouchers in supermarkets, compared to 34% in restaurants, and 24% in food stores, and 9 out of 10 French people want this to continue.
Faced with this plebiscite, Bercy has difficulty seeing how to go back, so the Ministry of the Economy suggests that restaurateurs be imaginative to attract customers. For example, to offer a dessert for every meal voucher used. The other avenue considered is a ceiling on authorized spending in supermarkets and a higher one in restaurants.
