War in Ukraine: Russian strike leaves at least 17 dead and 78 injured in Chernihiv

At least 17 people were killed and 78 injured, of which 40 were hospitalized, after a Russian attack Wednesday morning in Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, according to a latest report given Wednesday evening on Telegram by the city’s acting mayor, Oleksandr Lomako. Around 9 a.m. (local time), “three explosions occurred in the city”city mayor Oleksandr Lomako reported on national television, adding that it was a triple “direct strike on a social infrastructure building”. The bombing also left around sixty people injured.

“We have cut off all communications in this area: electricity, gas. In order to avoid even greater destruction”, also declared the city councilor. While the governor of Chernihiv oblast discusses “many injured”local authorities called on residents to come and donate blood, reports RBC Ukraine media on Telegram.

On Telegramthe Ukrainian president declared that this triple strike “would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment”. While further military aid from the United States is still blocked in the American Congress, the Ukrainian leader is calling for increased support from Ukraine’s partners to help it defend itself.

Attacked in the first days of the Russian invasion, the city of Chernihiv was the scene of a battle which saw the withdrawal of troops from Moscow. Since then, this city in the northeast of the country located near the border with Russia has been frequently bombed.
