Lower speed limits on most city streets if New York City gains control of state budget

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — We could soon see speed limits as low as 20 or even 10 miles per hour on some New York City streets.

That’s because the city could soon control its speed limits, a power that was previously in the hands of the state.

Legislation to change control was recently introduced as part of the new state budget.

It’s a big victory for traffic safety advocates who have pushed for the passage of “Sammy’s Law” for years.

Only a small number of streets will be reduced to 10 miles per hour.

In most places, speed limits will be reduced to 20 miles per hour.

There is one important exception.
