Amna Al-Dahhak: Earth Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about reducing plastic consumption

Dubai, April 21 / WAM / Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahhak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, confirmed that the celebration of Earth Day, which falls on April 22 of each year, is an important opportunity to raise awareness about reducing society and economic sectors’ consumption of plastic and enhancing the UAE’s trend towards… Circular economy.

Her Excellency said, “This year’s celebration of Earth Day raises an alarm bell using the slogan (Planet vs. Plastic) due to the worsening spread of plastic pollutants in oceans, rivers and the environment, which is a direct threat to human life and living organisms.”

She added, “At a time when the world is producing twice the amount of plastic waste that it produced two decades ago, the UAE was one of the first countries to attach special importance to promoting responsible consumption of plastic by legalizing the consumption of single-use products as of the beginning of this year and taking the necessary measures.” Regulatory policies and procedures that directly contribute to reducing plastic pollutants in the UAE.”

Her Excellency indicated that the UAE has launched the Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, through which it works to achieve sustainable management and effective use of natural resources by adopting methods and technologies of consumption and production to ensure the quality of life of current and future generations, enhance the efficiency of consumption of natural resources and reduce waste.

Her Excellency stressed that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is working with all relevant federal and government agencies through the Emirates Circular Economy Council to enhance the role of the private sector in promoting the circular economy and support the “Accelerating the Circular Economy 360” initiative, which the UAE has signed as the first country in the world, noting that limiting the import of The production and consumption of plastic is among the priorities of the Council and the Ministry in the coming years.

Her Excellency stressed that public awareness regarding the responsible use of plastic is a main pillar for reducing plastic pollutants in the environment, within a comprehensive framework of raising environmental awareness and instilling environmentally friendly behaviors in all members of society to help the Ministry and relevant authorities achieve climate and environmental sustainability and anticipate a sustainable future for the UAE. .
