The White House is considering a ban on imports of Russian uranium

The administration of US President Joe Biden is considering introducing a ban on the import of enriched uranium from Russia. About it reports Bloomberg, citing sources.

As the agency notes, this is happening against the backdrop of a similar project being “stalled” before consideration in the Senate. In December 2023, the project was passed by the US House of Representatives, but has not yet been approved by the Senate.

The presidential administration can use executive power to ban the import of uranium. At the same time, as Bloomberg notes, the White House and representatives of the nuclear industry prefer that the ban be introduced through the passage of a bill by Congress, since in this case it would be more difficult to repeal.

Uranium sales to the United States bring Russia about $1 billion a year. The White House has said that dependence on Russian uranium sources “poses a risk to the US economy.” At the same time, as Bloomberg writes, changing suppliers can be difficult and lead to an increase in the cost of uranium by 20 percent.
