Egypt takes over the presidency of the Khartoum Process from Germany

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that Egypt had taken over the presidency of the Khartoum Process from Germany.

Ambassador Ihab Badawi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security – in a speech he delivered on this occasion – praised the Khartoum Process as a forum for dialogue and cooperation. It brings together the countries of the European Union, the countries of the Horn of Africa, East Africa, Libya and Tunisia – These are the countries of the Central Mediterranean migration route – In addition to the European Commission and the African Union Commission. Ambassador Ihab Badawi also expressed his thanks for what the German presidency of the process has achieved, stressing the Egyptian presidency’s aspiration to continue working to enhance the activities of the Khartoum Process, by proposing various work priorities that serve the comprehensive approach to dealing with the migration file and take into account the interests of member states on both sides of the Mediterranean, in a way that guarantees ownership. Joint efforts for this process, taking into account the importance of international cooperation to deal with the migration issue and activate the principle of sharing burdens and responsibilities, and to employ migration to serve development purposes in countries of source, transit and destination, as well as shedding more light on the activity of this multilateral forum.  The delegations of member states in the Khartoum Process expressed their appreciation for the role played by Egypt in the migration file and their aspiration for the Egyptian presidency of the process. The ministry stated that Egypt assumes the presidency of the Khartoum Process, which includes 36 member states, for the second time, and this time its presidency coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the launch of the process. The Foreign Ministry indicated that an action plan is being developed to hold a series of activities, thematic meetings, and workshops to exchange experiences and best practices, with the aim of raising the efficiency of the relevant cadres in the member states of the process in a number of fields, for a period of one year under the Egyptian presidency.
