F1: Max Verstappen in pole position for the Miami Grand Prix ahead of Charles Leclerc, the Alpine still in Q2
The grip of his car bothers him but it doesn’t really show. Just a few hours after winning the sprint, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the best time in qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday May 4.
For the sixth time in six race weekends this season, the Dutchman will start from pole position. On the front row, he will be accompanied by the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, while that of Carlos Sainz will be third on the grid since the main cars failed to improve their times at the end of Q3.
On the French side, the completely dark picture at the start of the year is perhaps becoming clearer under the Florida sun. The two Alpines reached Q2 as at the Chinese Grand Prix two weeks ago. Enough to give hope to Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, respectively 12th and 13th at the end of the session, to finally open their points counters this Sunday. Especially since Gasly finished in 9th position in the sprint race, close to the points.
“There are positives, we are a tenth from Q3. There is still work to do but I am happy”, he reacted at the microphone of Canal+ after achieving his best performance in the exercise this season. At the foot of the podium on Saturday afternoon, Daniel Ricciardo will start last. The fault lies in two penalty positions, which he received in Shanghai, and which worsened his 18th place acquired on the track.
