Labels for "shrinkflation" : the Foodwatch association promises to "ensure that it is really implemented"

“We will be there to ensure that it is really put in place”, warns Saturday May 4 on franceinfo Camille Dorioz, campaign director at Foodwatch. From July 1, supermarkets of more than 400 square meters in France will be required to affix a label or poster “visible” And “legible” near, or even directly on the packaging, of all products affected by “shrinkflation”. The ministerial decree which imposes this measure was published on Saturday morning in the Official Journal.

“It’s a victory for transparency, for the consumer”, rejoices Camille Dorioz. This “real progress” was obtained “thanks to the mobilization of citizens, with Foodwatch” against this commercial practice which consists of reducing the quantity of the product without lowering the price. Foodwatch campaigns director welcomes action “fast” from the Minister for Trade Olivia Grégoire. “Now we are waiting for the distributors to play the game, we want to see these posters appear”he adds, recalling that they risk being fined otherwise.

Shrinkflation is “as old as marketing”, believes Camille Dorioz. But “galloping inflation, in the context of the war in Ukraine, favors” this practice according to him. The campaigns director at Foodwatch believes that these labels to alert customers “will have a deterrent effect”, because “distributors or industrialists” will give up practicing “shrinkflation” or justifying themselves “by saying ‘look we have made this enormous progress on the environment’ or ‘this is enormous progress on paying farmers and that’s why we are doing it'”, he argues.

Camille Dorioz also invites manufacturers and distributors “to trust them”. He also denounces manufacturers who use “shrinkflation” to increase their profits “on the backs of consumers”.

However, this measure “does not solve the problem of inflation and food insecurity which is increasing in France”. Thus, Foodwatch “is mobilizing to demand that distributors’ margins be regulated on healthy products on supermarket shelves.”
