Health: Executive steps to enhance “midwifery” in the health care system

The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed that a number of executive steps have been taken to strengthen the role of “midwifery” nursing. As an essential cadre in the health care system provided to mothers and children during pregnancy and childbirth, in conjunction with the celebration of “International Midwifery Day.” Which falls on May 5 of each year. 

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, pointed out the importance of the role of midwives in achieving the sustainable development goals in the field of health and reducing the global rate of maternal mortality, through the global strategy for midwifery. Pointing out the importance of the role of “midwifery” In increasing natural birth rates and improving maternal health, in addition to reducing costs and medical interventions for childbirth cases.  

Abdul Ghaffar explained: In recent years, the state has taken serious steps towards strengthening the role of midwives as an essential cadre of the health system, pointing to the inclusion of the “Midwifery Fellowship” The Higher Committee for Medical Specialties in the Ministry of Health and Population, and the inclusion of the “Midwifery” diploma in the Ministry of Health and Population. Within the specializations of the Arab Board, in addition to the inclusion of midwifery nursing specializations for master’s and doctoral degrees in Egyptian universities, in addition to the formation of the Higher Committee for Midwifery, which aims to modernize and follow up on the job tasks of midwives, for members of the nursing staff licensed to practice “midwifery”.

 For her part, Dr. Souad Abdel Majeed, Head of the Health Care and Nursing Sector, pointed to raising the efficiency of midwives within the work system by providing and updating various training for midwives in all governorates of the Republic, in accordance with the latest international standards, noting that 45 “midwives” have been trained. A member of the nursing staff on natural childbirth skills in North Sinai Governorate, explaining that the trainees are selected from the best competencies according to specific criteria, and evaluated periodically every 3 months.
