Railway workers, garbage collectors, civil servants… As the Paris 2024 Olympics approach, strike threats are increasing

Will strikes disrupt the Olympic Games? Less than three months before the Paris Olympics, which are to be held from July 26 to August 11, notice filings are increasing. Thursday May 2, a large part local sections of SUD-Rail and CGT-Cheminots have called for a strike in Ile-de-France for May 21. The garbage collectors of Paris and the civil service branch of the CGT have also filed strike notices. Franceinfo takes stock of the various hot issues.

Several branches of the SUD-Rail and CGT-Cheminots unions are calling for a strike on May 21 in Ile-de-France. They intend to put pressure on the management of the SNCF – which manages the suburban trains, the RER C, D and E as well as part of the RER A and B – before the negotiations scheduled for May 22 on the bonuses paid for the Games.

According to the SUD-Rail press release entitled “Contempt 2024”, the management of the SNCF is content “to distribute crumbs” to agents for the Olympics. The leaders are offering Ile-de-France railway workers a bonus of 50 euros gross per day of service during the Games, according to the unions, who consider this amount very insufficient. “What is put on the table does not suit us”, says Fabien Villedieu, SUD-Rail union representative. He asks a fixed bonus, at least 1,000 euros”as is the case at the RATP, where metro and RER drivers working from July 22 to September 8 will receive 1,600 euros.

“Beyond the financial aspect and the expected compensation, there is also this question of production (…), we hope that the questions of work rhythms are strictly applied to work in complete safety”, explains for his part the general secretary of the CGT-Cheminots, Thierry Nier. This call for a strike was followed by some local sections of Unsa-Ferroviaire, but not by the CFDT.

The railway workers are not the only ones to threaten a strike. The CGT of Paris garbage collectors has filed a strike notice on part of the month of May (May 14, 15, 16, 22, 23 and 24) and all summer (from July 1 to September 8), i.e. duringhe Olympic Games but also Paralympics. The CGT of Paris garbage collectors, the majority in the sector, demands a “exceptional bonus of 1,900 euros” for agents called upon during the Olympic Games, but also “an increase in the IFSE [indemnité de fonctions, de sujétions et d’expertise] 400 euros per month for all staff” Or “an additional index point gain at each level” for garbage collectors, sewer workers and gravediggers.
