These are the most popular Australian baby names – and the unexpected girls’ one rising faster than any other

The top baby names have been revealed with one surprising girl’s moniker climbing up the list for the first time in years.

New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages revealed the ten most popular baby names given to Aussie kids in the state in the 2023 calendar year, with Oliver and Isla coming out on top.

Oliver had held the number one spot for the boys since 2014 but was replaced by Noah in 2022 – which has since fallen to second place.

The top two girl’s names, Isla and Amelia, were separated by only four registered births. 2022’s top girl name was Charlotte, which fell to fifth place in 2023.

In a twist, ten new names have entered the top 100 for girls.
