Paris 2024: is it true that bus drivers will sell two tickets to users but tear one?

“During the period of the Olympic Games, tickets sold on board buses will increase from 2.50 euros to 5 euros. For management reasons, the RATP plans that the driver will give two tickets but tear one up”. This is the message shared on X by the National Federation of Transport Users (Fnaut), Sunday May 5. If we are to believe the association, while the prices of tickets sold on board buses during the Olympics will double, the RATP will therefore not offer a single ticket for 5 euros, but you will have to take two and the driver will tear one apart. This is partly true.

Contacted, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) confirms that “from July 20 to September 8, 2024, public transport prices are increasing in Île-de-France”but ensures that this increase “will not affect Ile-de-France residents”. More precisely, it will not touch “the 5 million subscribers from the Ile-de-France region” who have a Navigo Annual, Navigo Monthly, Navigo Senior, Amethyst or imagine R transport ticket. On the other hand, the price of the ticket sold on board buses will increase. It will go from 2.50 euros to 5 euros, confirms Ile-de-France Mobilités, recalling that “LThe sale of tickets on board is a breakdown ticket which concerns less than 2% of sales of bus tickets in Île-de-France..

The price of the ticket “troubleshooting” will therefore double, but you should not think about buying a single ticket for 5 euros. “In order to maintain this solution for travelers, Île-de-France Mobilités, in consultation with the RATP, has chosen the simplest solution: it will be necessary to purchase and validate two transport tickets”, explains the RATP. For a trip purchased on board a bus, the driver will give you two tickets whose unit value corresponds to 2.50 euros.

But contrary to what Fnaut claims, no ticket will be torn. “There will be a double validation”, provides Île-de-France Mobilités. In other words: you will have to compost your two tickets at the same time. To note that the “SMS ticket”, which allows you to receive a transport ticket directly on the phone by simply sending a message, will also go from 2.50 euros to 5 euros during the Games.

Although tickets purchased on board buses will be much more expensive during the Games, solutions exist for purchasing bus tickets at “normal” prices, provided you book a little in advance. For residents of the Ile-de-France region who do not subscribe, it is possible to “subscribe to the Liberté + service: a post-payment system, with which the T+ ticket will cost 1.73 euros throughout 2024”, recalls Île-de-France Mobilités. Concretely, you can subscribe online to a service which allows you to enter your RIB and you receive a Navigo pass which you do not need to recharge. All you have to do is badge each trip and your bill starts at the end of the month. You only pay for the journeys made.
