Scottish Independence Party leader John Swinney elected Prime Minister

He was the only candidate for the post of Prime Minister. Appointed on Monday as the new leader of the Scottish independence party SNP, John Swinney was elected head of government on Tuesday, May 7, by the local Parliament. He succeeds Humza Yousaf, who announced his resignation on April 29, when he was threatened by a double vote of no confidence in Holyrood, the local Parliament, located in Edinburgh. If the SNP is far ahead of the various opposition parties, it does not have an absolute majority.

Thus, John Swinney was elected Prime Minister, unsurprisingly, with 64 votes out of a total of 129 seats.

At 60, this veteran politician, long close to former Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon, promised Monday to allow “an open and respectful dialogue” within his training and more broadly‘”listen“all tendencies represented in the Scottish Parliament.

While part of the opposition accuses the SNP, in power since 2007, of prioritizing its fight for self-determination to the detriment of the daily lives of Scots, John Swinney promised to focus on “the economy, employment, cost of living”as well as on the health system, education and the climate crisis. The Scottish Parliament is responsible for many areas, including Health and Education, while Foreign Affairs and Defense fall to London.
