Alexandria, Sydney stabbing: Man is arrested after woman allegedly knifed in the head outside Crunch Fitness

A 45-year-old man has turned himself into police in relation to the stabbing of a 39-year-old woman in a gym carpark after officers admitted their suspect was a known domestic violence offender.

The woman was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition on Wednesday after the alleged attack outside Crunch Gym in Alexandria, southern Sydney, about 12.30pm.

She was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the neck, head and back with kitchen-style knife before the knifeman fled the scene in a 2006 grey Ford Focus hatchback.

A 45-year-old man presented himself to Dee Why Police Station about 7.50am on Thursday in relation to the alleged attack.

He was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station for further investigation.

No charges have been laid.

It is believed the man and woman were known to each other with the incident being treated as domestic violence-related.

After reviewing CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses, officers believed the offender was previously in a ‘very short domestic relationship’ with the woman.

‘It’s horrendous what has happened to this poor victim,’ South Sydney Police Area Command Superintendent Rod Hart said.

Police on Wednesday said their suspect was previously known for domestic violence-related offences.

Wednesday’s violent attack followed the NSW Government’s proposal of increased police powers on Tuesday.

Under the new rules, officers will be allowed to ‘wand’ people for knives in busy public areas, including shopping centres and transport hubs.

The new laws will likely be introduced into NSW parliament next week.
