Georgia Godwin suffers Achillies injury before Olympic Games

Olympic gymnast Georgia Godwin has delivered a teary message to social media after suffering an Achilles injury less than three months out from the Olympic Games.

The 26-year-old Commonwealth Games gold medallist said she was meeting with a surgeon to determine what comes next.

“Hey everyone, this is definitely not the news I want to be sharing with you all right now – a couple of days out from nationals, less than 80 days from Paris,” Godwin said

“I’ve sustained an Achilles injury. It’s extremely heartbreaking. It’s not ideal. I’m looking forward to the next few steps.

“I’ll be heading back to Brisbane, having a chat with the surgeon. We’ll just see where we go from there.

“I’m not entirely sure what the recovery process looks like moving forward, but I’ve got an amazing team around me and trying to be as positive as possible. I’ll need a bit of time to process everything.”

Godwin, who entered the video on crutches, didn’t say how long the expected return to sport would be, nor whether she would recover in time for the Olympics in Paris, but said it would be a long recovery.

“It’s still very fresh + I’m a little lost but trying to keep it real and show all sides of sport (even the sad, vulnerable & uncomfortable side,” she wrote in the video caption.
