"Hunt for the poor", "restriction of our civil liberties"… David Belliard, deputy mayor of Paris, fears the consequences of the Olympics

“I don’t think I’m a spoilsport, I think I’m responsible”. Guest of franceinfo Friday May 10, David Belliard, deputy mayor of Paris responsible in particular for public space and mobility, fears that the Olympic Games (JO) will have harmful consequences, despite their “positive aspects”. “Are these Games really going to be an accelerator for the common good or an accelerator of movements that we are observing?”, asks the elected representative of the Ecologists. He quotes “the hunt for the poor, the hunt for the most precarious, those most in difficulty or the restriction, again, of our public freedoms”.

David Belliard wonders in particular about the conditions for traveling in the area of the opening ceremony, from July 18 until 1 p.m. on the 26th, the day it will be held.

A pass, in the form of a QR code, will be essential, whether you travel on foot, by bike or in a motorized vehicle. On July 26, from 1 p.m., those with a ticket will be able to access it without a QR code, and motorized vehicles will be prohibited, with the exception of security and emergency vehicles. The QR code in question will be issued once “that we have verified that you do not represent a safety hazard”he recalls.

“What are these evaluations, what will also be the use of the data collected for the issuance of this QR code, all this still remains unresolved or quite vague”he points out. “I would not like us to take advantage of these Olympics to test and install laws that are even more restrictive than what we know today”he adds.
