Loco Films Nabs International to Karlovy Vary World Premiere ‘The Anatomy of the Horses’

Paris-based Loco Films has picked up international sales rights to Peruvian Daniel Vidal Toche’s feature debut “The Anatomy of the Horses,” (“La anatomía de los caballos”), which world premieres in Proxima Competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

Filmed in the Peruvian Andes in Spanish and Quechua languages, “The Anatomy of the Horses” represents an exploration of time and revolution in the remote highlands of Perú.

Loco Films has shared the trailer in exclusivity with Variety.

Spaniard Ignacio Vuelta produced the feature at Tarifa-based Playa Chica Films and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Vidal Toche. Both are graduates at Spain’s Madrid Film School ECAM, behind ECAM Forum.

Further co-production partners are Sideral Cinema in Spain, Pioneros Producciones in Perú, Colombia’s Los Niños Films and Mito Films and Promenades Films from France.

Actors Juan Quispe and Edith Ramos topline a story that intertwines two periods, that following the 18th century revolutionary Ángel Pumacahua, defeated in battle, who flees to his village and, upon his arrival, finds himself in the Peruvian Andes of the 21st century.

A meteorite has crashed nearby, tearing through time and marking the collision of eras. There, amidst the echoes of this rupture, Ángel meets Eustaquia, searching for her twin sister, who disappeared in the fight against a mining company.

“Together, they question whether revolution is something inherent within us or merely a construct we are destined to pursue forever,” Vidal Toche explained.

“’With ‘The Anatomy of the Horses,’ I aimed to express my feelings about my country, where the desire for change always seems to fail. In Perú, as in Latin America, it feels like we start again and again from the same place, trapped in an unbroken cycle,” he said.

“In the Andean region of Puno, the landscape is harsh, relentless; a place where the earth itself seems to resist as if the weight of history and suffering persists in every corner,” he added.

A world sales and production company created by seasoned European film executives Laurent Daniélou and Enrique Gonzalez Kuhn, Loco Films aims to find and unveil the finest of independent filmmaking.

Madrid-based Sideral handles Spanish distribution rights to “The Anatomy of the Horses,” which world premieres July 7 at the Karlovy Vary Festival, as part of the Proxima Competition.

Proxima offers space to the world’s new voices to complement the Crystal Globe Competition by celebrating contemporary cinema with a collection of forward-thinking films and discoveries.

The 59th Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival runs July 4-12.
