Woman shot dead by police in Times Square after fatally stabbing one and injuring another
A woman has been shot dead by police in the heart of Times Square in Manhattan after she killed a person and injured another in a stabbing attack, according to reports.
The suspect stabbed a man and a woman just before 4:30 p.m. ET on Monday, as tourists filled the streets and New Yorkers were on their evening commute home, unnamed sources told the New York Post.
Officers opened fire on the woman after she waved a knife at them near a New York City Police Department substation, according to sources.
The woman was shot after refusing to put down the knife, two people with knowledge of the matter told The New York Times.
Before pulling their guns, police did deploy their tasers, but the woman continued to confront them, the Post’s sources said.
The woman and one of the victims reportedly died at the hospital, and the second victim is in critical condition. The identities of the suspect and victims have yet to be revealed.
A motive for the stabbing remains unknown at this time, but it is not believed to be terrorism-related, according to the Post.
Officers reportedly recovered the suspect’s weapon.
