Khan was instrumental in more than 100 infiltration attempts since 1995, they said, even as there was no official statement on his identity.
The army and the police have so far just said that two infiltrators were killed in the operation.
“One of the persons killed in Gurez was carrying a few identity cards, which mention his name as Bagu Khan, a resident of Muzaffarabad. A person of the same name with alias Samandar Chacha was wanted for being instrumental in guiding infiltrators for over 25 years now,” said an official, who did not wish to be identified.
The identity of another person killed in the operation is yet to be ascertained.
Khan had been one of the most wanted men for more than a quarter of a century, known for his expertise and knowledge of the terrain and for working as an infiltration guide with almost all terrorist organisations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, said another official.”Khan had been active on the Line of Control since 1995 and had enabled numerous crossings of infiltrators into Kashmir, mainly from 1996 to 2010,” the official said. “He was involved in over 100 infiltration attempts and his killing is a major setback for the terror networks across the border. It seems he was reactivated in recent years and given some fresh assignments.”Gurez has a massive army presence but has been one of the main infiltration routes since the 1990s. As the area remains frequently cut off from the rest of Kashmir during winters, due to its altitude and heavy snowfall, it witnesses heightened activity of infiltrators in autumn.
The police and army have maintained that despite the ceasefire of February 2021, several infiltrators have crossed the Line of Control and International Border and are active in Jammu and some parts of Kashmir.
