Ryder Cup 2025 live: Day 1 scores as Rahm-Hatton prepare for DeChambeau-Thomas battle in foursomes

Edgy play from Thomas
Justin Thomas plays a punch and run up to the green and gets inside of Europe’s ball.
He’s left a tricky putt for Dechambeau but the American will be able to read Rahm’s line as Europe are up first.

Hatton takes second shot
Tyrell Hatton has the second shot for Europe and has a good lie despite being in the rough thanks to Jon Rahm’s drive.
If he sticks this close the pressure will switch back onto America.
He’s composed and takes out the wedge to flick the ball up onto the green. A big chunk of turf comes with the ball but he’s safely on the green and leaves Rahm an uphill putt for birdie.

‘Did you see what he just did?’
“Did you see what he just did? That’s why we have him there!” says Keegan Bradley when asked why he deciding to begin the competition with Bryson Dechambeau.
Meanwhile, Luke Donald admits the atmosphere isn’t ‘quite the same as Rome’ but it’s ‘electric’.

Ryder Cup opening drives
Jon Rahm has the honour to hit the first shot for Europe.
He takes out the driver with the crowd jeering at him. Rahm goes over the trees and rattles the shot into the first cut of rough.
The noise level increases as Bryson Dechambeau picks out his driver as well.
The big-hitting American smokes it in a similar direction to Rahm but finds the fairway just a few yards short of the green!

2025 Ryder Cup begins at Bethpage Black
Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton stride onto the first tee met by a chorus of boos from the crowd.
“We’ve got each other.” Rahm tells Hatton as both players are greeted warmly by captain Luke Donald.
The tee is very loud as the players pose for their photos, the crowd quietens as the announcements are made.
More boos come when Rahm and Hatton are introduced, naturally Bryson Dechambeau and Justin Thomas are cheered.

Rory booed by US fans
“Rory booed and whistled on the first tee after his warmup is shown on the big screen. “F*** you, Rory” rings around the grandstand.
“Fair to say his charm offensive, saying the USA is “the best country in the world” has not tricked many of these USA fans.”

‘U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!’
“Keegan Bradley is soaking this all in, a sprint past the first tee box and a kneel down, gazing out to the fairway.
“Then the USA captain whips up the fans, the Star Spangled Banner is ringing around this first tee box, plus a rendition of “Keegan Bradley, Keegan, Bradley.”
“There’s genuine affection towards the USA captain here. Oh, and there’s the American’s third song, ‘U-S-A, U-S-A.’”

Only one question remains before Team Europe’s bid for history
As Matt Fitzpatrick worked on his short game around the greens at Bethpage Black, a group of American fans saw an opportunity to get in his ear. They laughed at a couple of his duffed chips from the long grass and loudly predicted that he wouldn’t be picked to play in the Friday morning foursomes by European captain Luke Donald.
“They were telling me, ‘Oh, you’re probably going to be here [practising chipping] on Friday’,” Fitzpatrick smiled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re probably right to be fair’.” They were wrong, as it turns out: Fitzpatrick will be thrown straight into the action in a new European pairing with Ludvig Aberg, as the opening pairings were finally announced.

McGinley says Europe are prepared
“This is the most prepared team I’ve ever come across,” Paul McGinely said of Europe’s preparations in the build up to this Ryder Cup.
He added: “We have come at this very differently from any away match before.”
Europe’s team features 11 of the 12 players who won in Rome two years ago and, in Luke Donald, also have a captain leading the team for consecutive Ryder Cups.
Preparation has been ongoing to make sure the players are comfortable and the hope is that this will translate onto the course.
