Russia unveils a new robotic air defense system
Arab Defense Website – October 30, 2025: The Russian company Gumich RTK unveiled its new robotic air defense system called Impulse-PVO, during the Inter Politics 2025 international security and defense exhibition in Moscow.
The system is designed to counter low-altitude reconnaissance drones via kinetic interceptors, and is offered as a mobile and unmanned solution to address advanced aerial threats.
The system includes eight “interceptor drones,” each of which weighs about 1.35 kilograms and can reach a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. It was specifically developed to destroy small drones without using missiles, but rather by launching projectiles that directly hit the target from a ground robotic platform.
According to the manufacturer, the Impulse-PVO system operates over a wide frequency range between 700 MHz and 6200 MHz, giving it the ability to operate in complex electromagnetic environments. It can also be controlled remotely, as part of a Russian strategy aimed at automating short-range air defense to protect moving military formations or vital sites.
The new system joins a recent generation of Russian robotic systems focused on self-protection of forces with autonomous or remote-controlled methods. The company has not yet announced the date of its entry into active service, but its unveiling comes in light of the expansion of Russian national efforts to adapt to the increasing spread of drones in modern wars.
Impulse-PVO represents a low-cost option compared to traditional missile-based air defense systems, allowing it to be widely deployed to secure military convoys, advanced field bases, or sensitive civilian facilities.
It is noteworthy that a hand-held version of the same system was seen earlier this year in the city of St. Petersburg, in the possession of members of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s personal protection team. A member of the Presidential Protection Unit was photographed carrying a small FPV drone specially prepared for drone interceptions. Its appearance aroused widespread interest due to its small size and clear combat design.
Although officials have not officially commented on the device, this public sighting suggests that the technology used in the Impulse-PVO system is also being adapted for personal protection and VIP escort missions, alongside traditional military uses.
