Secret Service pounce on hammer-wielding maniac accused of breaking into JD Vance’s $1.4m mansion
A suspect was ‘physically detained’ by the Secret Service after breaking into JD Vance’s home with a hammer early Monday morning.
A man is in custody after the alleged break-in at the Vice President’s property in Cincinnati, Ohio, according to local cops.
Secret Service agents heard a loud noise at the home around midnight and found the individual, who had broken a window with a hammer and was trying to get into the house, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.
The agency said it is working with the Cincinnati Police Department and the US Attorney’s Office in order to charge any suspects involved in the incident.
A spokesman told the Daily Mail: ‘An adult male was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department after being detained by US Secret Service personnel for causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the Vice President.’
They added: ‘Shortly after midnight on Monday, January 5, the man was physically detained by Secret Service agents assigned to the Vice President’s home. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the Vice President and his family were not in Ohio.’
Agents alerted police just after midnight after seeing the suspect running from the home, which is the secondary residence for Vance, his wife Usha and their three children.
The man had also vandalized a Secret Service vehicle on his way up the home’s driveway, one of the officials told the AP.

Following the break-in, footage has been released showing large holes in the windows of the Vice President’s home as police officers patrol the scene and record evidence of the damage.
The luxurious rural property overlooks the Ohio River and spans 2.3 acres. The Vance family purchased the home for $1.4 million.
After taking the vice presidential oath of office in January 2025, the Vice President and his wife have lived with their three children at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC.
The couple also own a property on Capitol Hill.
They previously owned a farmhouse in Alexandria, bought shortly after Vance began his term as a Senator for Ohio, which they sold in March last year.
A motive for the suspect detained in the break-in has not been released by law enforcement at this time.
While the second family were not staying at the home over the weekend, city officials announced road closures and checkpoints near the Vance property.
