The Internet is currently in a CBK-inspired style frenzy and it’s got me thinking about hair accessories or more specifically, the concept of hair jewellery. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was of course known for her signature C.O. Bigelow headband – a sleek tortoise shape that held her warm blonde hair out of her face. It was understated yet unmistakable; the kind of functional accessory that became synonymous with her broader minimalist uniform. I love everything about it, but today there’s so many other options at our disposal.
As someone with very short hair, I find hair accessories are the perfect way to add interest to my otherwise very homogenous style. I’m taking queues from jewellery trends and looking towards tassels, pearls, crystal, silver, onyx and silk. Why stop at earrings when you can also adorn your hair? The lines between the two are also feeling increasingly blurred, with designers approaching hair pieces in much the same way as fine jewellery: sculptural, textural and intended to elevate an otherwise simplest look.
From scrunchies and cuffs to pins and barrettes, believe me when I say that hair embellishment – whether it’s for practical reasons or otherwise – is having a real moment.
