Want to smell cosy? These are the best winter fragrances

Winter is here and we may as well lean in. Early nights, thick sweaters, a fire place (or at least, some central heating) and a fragrance that adds to the mood. Winter fragrance can theoretically be whatever you want it to be, but we prefer method dressing with warm notes of burning logs, incense, creamy vanilla, worn leather, spice and tobacco. The goal is to smell warm and cosy – the kind of olfactory notes you’d find mountainside or in a dimly-lit Parisian bar.

If you’re looking for a way to embrace winter (or shake of any seasonal blues) perfume is the perfect way to do it. The best winter fragrances according to RUSSH, below:

Replica by Maison Margiela By The Fireplace

Perhaps an obvious first choice but By The Fireplace is a smoky, slightly sweet mix of smouldering logs, roasted chestnuts, clove and vanilla. It smells like the inside of an alpine cabin while snow gently falls outside. What’s not to love?

Le Labo Labdanum 18

Labdanum is an intoxicating musk that smells like warm skin and powder with a touch of spicy amber. It’s cosy but animalic with a vintage quality that would go perfectly with gloves and a fur coat.

Ormaie Tableau Parisien

This is a heady, milky tuberose with warming ginger, spice, rose and tobacco. Distinctly French, it’s sensual and elegant but not overbearing. Winter coded but not in an obvious way.

Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique

Florals are associated with spring but Fleur Narcotique adds juicy fruits (lychee, bergamot) and musk, giving this fragrance a hypnotic depth.

Abel Coat Check

Coat check smells like post dinner espresso and cigarettes in a sexy restaurant, only there’s cassis, cacao and cedar to keep it balanced.

CHANEL Sycamore

Some might say this is the ultimate winter perfume (I’m one of those people). It’s made up of vegetal, authentic woody notes alongside smoke, vetiver and vanilla. It’s rich, complex and very elegant.

Editions de Parfums By Frédéric Malle Contre Jour

This is an anti-winter winter perfume that juxtaposes sunny everlasting flowers with punk-ish rose and sandalwood. It’s rich and warm but has a femininity that’s really special.

Vyrao Mamajuju

This is the perfume equivalent of a heated yoga class followed by sound bowl healing. It’s grounding, meditative and leaves a sweet taste in your mouth. With Australian sandalwood, saffron, cumin and nutmeg, it brings all the feel good energy for the winter months.

Maison Louise Marie Vanille Infinie

Vanilla in winter just feels right. Maison Lousie Marie’s take is a delicious gourmand but with illuminating citron, creamy jasmine, tonka and musk. It’s cosy vanilla but in a grown up way.
