The body of a 38-year-old Scottish woman has been found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens, Greek authorities have revealed.
Her identity was confirmed following an Interpol document sent to the Greek Police.
Investigators established that the woman flew to Greece on June 29 from the United States after travelling via Cyprus.
Police have requested passenger manifests from the airline she travelled with to determine if she was with anyone, and are checking local accommodation registries for reservations under her name.
The suitcase was found at noon on Saturday in an abandoned building, located on 7 Evelpidon Street, in the Kypseli neighbourhood of the capital.
The alarm was raised after a homeless man had notified the authorities that he had spotted a suitcase that was emitting a foul smell and said, ‘it looked like a human limb.’
The initial examination of the body showed no obvious injuries. After the body was discovered, Greek authorities took fingerprints but found no match in the national database.
She was found wearing shorts bearing the name of a French university, prompting Interpol to be alerted.

The British Embassy in Greece and the woman’s father have been notified.
Police want to speak to her father to gather information about her recent activities.
Her cause of death remains unknown.

The woman, 62, who was travelling in Greece, died on Sunday morning and was found by staff who entered her room and discovered her body.
Emergency services were called and the pensioner was moved off the cruise to the port of Athinios.
She was rushed to hospital where she was officially pronounced dead.
Local authorities are investigating her death and a post-mortem examination on her body has been ordered to determine the cause.
Police do not believe there was any foul play involved and say her sudden death points towards health-related reasons.
The cruise reportedly continued to set sail on its Aegean Sea route after the woman was taken to hospital.
