Luigi Mangione next courtroom battle could shape murder trial
The 28-year-old man accused of gunning down a top health insurance chief executive on a Manhattan sidewalk returns to court Tuesday for a high-stakes hearing ahead of his scheduled murder trial next month.
Luigi Mangione faces state charges including murder, weapons offenses, and forgery brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg following the December 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a midtown hotel. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all state charges, as well as separate federal stalking charges.
At Tuesday’s hearing, New York State Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro is expected to iron out crucial trial logistics, including jury selection protocols and media access for the highly publicized courtroom showdown.
Prosecutors allege they possess a mountain of evidence linking Mangione to the slaying, including hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, fingerprint and DNA matches, a cellphone, a firearm with matching ballistics, and a notebook detailing an intense hatred for insurance companies and a desire to kill.
Defense attorneys have kept their strategy closely guarded and have not conceded that Mangione was the shooter, though a July court filing hinted they may argue he suffered an extreme mental health breakdown during the incident.
Thompson was ambushed and killed early in the morning outside a hotel hosting an investor conference. The execution-style attack, captured on video, sparked a massive five-day manhunt before police apprehended Mangione in Pennsylvania.
While the state murder trial is set to begin next month, Mangione’s separate federal trial is scheduled for January.
