Celtic fan dies after falling ill during Champions League qualifier

A Celtic fan has died after falling ill during the club’s Champions League qualifier against LASK on Wednesday.

The Parkhead side announced the death in a statement released on Thursday evening.

The statement read: “It is with real sadness that we confirm that one of our supporters has passed away after becoming ill during last night’s match at Celtic Park. Despite the efforts of medical staff, tragically, he died later in hospital.

“We thank the emergency services and fellow supporters within the stadium for all their efforts in dealing with this tragic incident.

“We extend our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family and we will ensure that we offer them our full support at this extremely difficult time.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said in a statement: “Around 9.05pm on Wednesday, 19 August, 2026, police received a report of a man having taken unwell within Celtic Park, Glasgow.

“Emergency services attended and a 65-year-old man was conveyed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he died a short time later.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.”

The devastating news comes after Celtic took a giant step towards qualifying for the league phase of the Champions League by beating LASK 3-0 in the first leg of their qualifier.

Benjamin Nygren opened the scoring, before two goals from Camilo Duran either side of half time put Celtic in full control of the tie.

The return leg is due to be played next Tuesday in Austria.

Celtic have made a strong start to the season across all fronts, winning all four of their matches so far. They began the campaign by beating Dundee 1-0 in the league, and followed that up by thrashing Klimarnock 5-1 away from home.

This victory came without Martin O’Neill on the touchline, as the Celtic boss was recovering from a “small procedure” that required him to be hospitalised earlier in the week.

Celtic then beat Dundee United 4-0 in the second round of the Scottish League Cup on Saturday prior to their dominant win over LASK, which leaves them on the brink of reaching the league phase of this season’s Champions League.
