Greek air force jet crashes while performing solo display at airshow

A Greek air force jet crashed at an aerial show north of Athens, sending plumes of black smoke into the air before several thousand spectators on Saturday.

Officials said it was not immediately clear whether pilots had managed to eject before the crash and that it was unclear whether anyone in the crowd had been injured.

‘A search and rescue operation is under way,’ the official added.

A large fire continues to burn at the crash site and two helicopters were seen battling the blaze on the spot.

Loudspeakers at the air base were urging people to leave the area, according to ERT.

The dramatic moment was captured on video as spectators watched the terrifying incident unfold.

The incident occurred at Athens Flying Week, an annual air show, at Tanagra air force base.

The remainder of today’s show has been cancelled.
