Lindsay Clancy ‘copycat’s’ husband and family lay son, 2, to rest at funeral while she faces judge in court

A funeral was held for the two-year-old boy allegedly killed by his own mother as she made her first court appearance.

Corie Walsh, 40, was charged with first-degree murder after her son, Barrett ‘Bear’ Walsh, was found hanged in the basement of their family home in the suburbs of Chicago on September 1.

At her detention hearing on Tuesday, Walsh’s defense team, which is led by Andrea Lyon, who represented Orlando mom Casey Anthony, revealed that her family members were not in court because the boy was being laid to rest.

Walsh’s husband, 44-year-old Michael Walsh, and their families ‘fully support’ her, attorney Robert Kerr told the judge.

Michael and Walsh’s mother are ‘heartbroken’ that they cannot be here and ask that the court know they have ‘unwavering support for her, he added.

The defense asked that Walsh be released to her mother pending trial so she can receive psychiatric treatment.

However, the judge ruled that Walsh will be held in jail and the State Attorney’s Office must ensure she gets proper medical treatment.

‘I can’t make this decision out of compassion or empathy,’ Judge Amy Bertani said.

‘There is clear and convincing evidence that she is involved in [a] first-degree murder offense and is a clear and present threat to her husband and other children.’

Her next court appearance has been scheduled for September 24. She has not yet entered a plea.

At the hearing, prosecutors shared disturbing new details about the alleged murder and the mother’s interest in the Lindsay Clancy trial.

They argued that Walsh was actively discussing the Clancy case in a group chat on the day of the killing, and claimed that Walsh had intended to poison her husband.

‘She was going to poison him with a drink. She had a drink and a number of prescription bottles on the table,’ the prosecutor said.

But the defense insisted that Walsh was in a group chat that peddled baseless conspiracy theories about Clancy’s husband, Patrick, but on the day of Bear’s death, she seemed to change her mind.

Walsh allegedly texted her friends: ‘It’s manslaughter. Please help. I’m really freaking out.’

Jurors were deliberating murder charges against Clancy when Walsh sent the message, but the case ultimately ended in a mistrial on Friday.

Clancy admitted to strangling her three children in January 2023, but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis and overmedication.

Neighbors discovered Barrett hanging from a rafter in the basement of the family’s suburban Chicago home, prosecutors said.

As with Clancy’s defense, Walsh’s lawyer said their client was suffering a ‘psychotic episode.’

According to the prosecution, Walsh told police she killed Bear as he was ‘the devil’ and ‘the Antichrist.’

Outside the courthouse on Tuesday, Lyon said: ‘We’re disappointed with the ruling, but we are going to continue to work really hard to investigate this case and present the defense as correct, which is that she was psychotic and this is not a first-degree murder,’ Lyon said. 

She also claimed that calling Walsh a ‘Lindsay Clancy copycat’ is ‘sickening.’

‘That speculation that this has anything to do with that, that it’s a copycat or anything like that, is baseless and cruel,’ Lyon said.
