Former prominent Liberal MP Bruce Baird dies aged 84

Former Liberal politician Bruce Baird has died at the age of 84.

It’s understood he died in Singapore following a fall he suffered while travelling home from a holiday in Europe, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Baird, the father of ex-NSW Premier Mike Baird and journalist Julia Baird, played an integral role in securing Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games.

He was first elected to NSW Parliament in 1984 where he held the seat of Northcott.

Baird held the seat for 11 years before he moved into federal politics, later being elected to represent the electorate of Cook – which future Prime Minister Scott Morrison would go on to lead.

During his time in politics, he was the Minister for Sydney’s Olympic Bid from 1990 to 1993, as well as the transport minister.

Baird retired from politics in 2007.

He leaves behind his three children, Mike, Julia and Steve. His wife Judy died in 2021.

The NSW Liberal Party paid tribute in a statement on Friday.

‘Bruce was a party stalwart and a greatly respected politician, serving the people of NSW in the state and federal parliaments.

‘We offer our deepest condolences on behalf of all members to his family at this difficult time.’

NSW Liberal MP Matt Cross paid tribute to Mr Baird in a social media post, writing that he was devastated to learn of his death.

‘Bruce was a longtime mentor to me, and to so many others. It’s hard to comprehend his passing,’ Mr Cross wrote.

‘I’ll miss his friendship, mentorship and guidance.’
