With old-school plastic bags phased out in favour of environmentally-friendly shopping, the ‘bag for life’ has become a store staple across Britain.
The latest it-bag is no longer a Birkin, Kelly, or Constance. Instead, supermarket totes designed by the likes of Anya Hindmarch have become the ultimate accessory for middle-class shoppers.
This week, Ms Hindmarch’s latest design of her much-loved Universal Bag – a recyclable hard tote which retails for £10 to £15 – has proven so popular in Waitrose that the retailer has been forced to impose a one-bag limit per customer.
Launched in partnership with the retailer’s Dish podcast, the stylish pink and green-striped bag has seen avid customers form queues in the hopes of getting their hands on the item.
Nowadays, not just any old tote from Sainsbury’s or Tesco will do. The summer months saw an explosion of Trader Joe’s tote bags in the UK, with masses of shoppers turning to eBay and Amazon to purchase versions much dearer than the original $2.99.
Meanwhile, designer brands have also jumped on the trend of middle-class supermarket bags – with Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren launching their own versions of the handy item, alongside retailers such as Daylesford.
From ‘yummy mummys and wannabe Gwyneth’, to a tote that is a sure sign of a wealthy Cotswolds resident, read on to discover what your go-to bag for life says about you…
Nowadays, not just any old tote from Sainsbury’s or Tesco will do, because the most important – and virtually only- criteria among British shoppers is that your bag must exclusively be from a posh supermarket
Fashion expert Caroline Baxter’s verdict: The ultimate stylish shopper status symbol for the person who is fashionable but doesn’t want to buy an actual Anya handbag.
Esteemed designer Anya Hindmarch sent shoppers across the nation into a frenzy after she teamed up with Waitrose for her latest offering of the stylish Universal Bag.
It comes following the remarkable success of her previous collaborations with Ocado to create a deep purple bag and a taupe tote for Whole Foods, among others.
Unlike her usual bags that can cost hundreds of pounds, Hindmarch’s Universal Bags cost just £15. And it’s not just the fair price attracting customers, but the sustainable qualities.
‘Launched in 2021 after two years of research and exploration, the Universal Bag is Anya Hindmarch’s most ambitious sustainability project to date.
‘The next generation of reusable bag, the Universal Bag builds on I Am Not A Plastic Bag, and I Am A Plastic Bag, tackling single-use plastic, rescuing post-consumer waste from landfill and inspiring a reuse mindset.
‘The spacious bag’s fabric is made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and is fully recyclable and offered at an accessible price point.’
According to celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot, the appeal of this stylish bag is its inherent ‘simplicity’.
She told the Daily Mail: ‘The structured shape, bold typography and carefully considered colour combinations give it a polished, contemporary feel.
‘It bridges the gap between practicality and fashion, making it feel more like an accessory than a traditional shopping bag.’
Laura Windsor, known as the Queen of Etiquette, added: ‘Nothing says middle-class Britain quite like a Waitrose bag — but Anya Hindmarch seems to have turned it into a fashion statement.
‘It’s no longer just about carrying your groceries; it is more about belonging to a social group.’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: Understated for the person who wants their shopping bags to match their Farrow and Ball paint chart.
Launched in May 2021, the Bellroy Market Tote is a versatile and leather-free tote bag designed to help carry a range of items at a heavy weight.
Initially, the brand established the 15L Market Tote, before later expanding to additional sizes such as the smaller City Tote and the larger Market Tote Plus, with a variety of colours that span from black to blue, willow and taupe.
Featuring two side sleeves, a centre slip pocket and long shoulder straps, this delightful tote bag combines chic, stylish fashion with day-to-day practicalities.
Ms Windsor added: ‘This is for someone who likes to have their life in order. The aubergine colour is understated and sophisticated, and the abundance of pockets show its practicality and your preference for function over fuss.
‘You value something useful rather than something that merely looks pretty. There is a quiet confidence about you: you walk through life without needing to shout about who you are.’
Meanwhile, etiquette expert Julius F. Smith added: ‘Very much mid-market and, to be honest, forgettable. It is the tote equivalent of a sensible shoe.
‘On the plus side, it is designed for someone who does not wish to stand out, and I imagine its owner to be a thoroughly functional sort of person.’
Ms Talbot said: ‘Bellroy’s aesthetic is rooted in modern design and functionality. The clean lines, understated branding and premium materials give the tote a refined look, appealing to those who prefer a minimalist style.’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: Picked up in New England on holiday and will be taken on every shopping trip to show that they have been stateside. It’s roomy with a nod to the return of preppy nostalgia with Gen Z.
The explosion of Trader Joe’s tote bags in the UK might come as a surprise, given they’re only sold directly in stores and there are currently no shops located outside the States.
However, geographical distance has only proven to be a minor inconvenience for members of the tote bag crew yet to visit America, with shoppers turning to eBay and Amazon to purchase versions much dearer than the original $2.99, for a total of around £20.
Content creator Jessica Abbassian, who was lucky enough to pick one up on her trip across the pond, said: ‘They are, in fact, the elite tote for carrying any and everything around London.’
According to Ms Talbot, this tote bag has ultimately ‘gained popularity because of its recognisable branding and casual, laid-back aesthetic’.
She added: ‘It has an effortless charm that works particularly well with relaxed dressing, although its appeal is more playful and lifestyle-led than traditionally polished.’
Ms Windsor said: ‘An everyday bag rather than a glamorous accessory, which will more likely go unnoticed – you are not someone who really cares about your image or what your next door neighbour thinks.
‘Being white of course, means you will need to take a bit more care of it to keep it looking clean! But then on the other hand, why would you care? You aren’t trying to impress anybody…’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: The perfect bag for Londonders who love to go to the Farmers Market on a weekend, matches their Barbour. It can also double up as a second workbag for the office.
Made from sustainable materials, this roomy tote bag was launched in December 2023 as part of the brand’s 10-year anniversary celebration.
Machine washable, it is described as a ‘durable tote bag that is up to the job, making it easy to stash items, while being comfy to carry’.
Ms Talbot praises this tote bag for its ability to fold, while also retaining its stylish exterior.
She noted that the ‘sleek materials and considered silhouette’ make it appear and feel instantly ‘more elevated’.
‘Consumers increasingly appreciate accessories that work hard without compromising on appearance,’ she said.
‘The most sophisticated totes tend to have a timeless feel rather than following a short-lived trend.
Ms Windsor said: ‘A good example of how a shopping bag can be both practical and elegant. The green is attractive, and the fact that the bag folds away neatly means you can keep it in your handbag until you need it.
‘It suggests somebody who plans ahead and likes to be prepared and there is always something rather elegant about being prepared.…’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: Spacious and designer led and affordable, good for those carrying gym kit.
Designer brand Tommy Hilfiger launched its stylish tote bag, listed as a ‘strong reusable bag made with long handles to sit comfortably on the shoulder and shorter handles for carrying’.
The designer brand’s stylish tote features the colour block design of Tommy Hilfiger, alongside elegant straps that make it perfect for day-to-day use.
Perfect for a beach day or running errands, the affordable price tag of £10 is seen as surprising to some given the upmarket products offered by Tommy Hilfiger.
Ms Talbot noted: ‘Classic heritage brands often rely on recognisable colour palettes and strong branding, which create an instantly identifiable look.
‘A canvas tote from an established label can feel timeless, particularly when the design remains simple and avoids excessive detailing.’
According to Miss Windsor, this bag ‘has a distinctly nautical feel’.
She added: ‘The combination of navy, cream and red brings to mind the South of France – sailing, the seaside and summer holidays.
‘I would say it’s more of a lifestyle accessory than a supermarket bag, and I can imagine it working beautifully on a yacht or boat.’
Julius said: ‘Carry one of these, and you will certainly be loud. You will not go unnoticed, and I can almost hear a tune from Sweet Home Alabama playing in the background.
‘This is the tote for those who like to arrive before they have entered the room. Subtlety has left the building.’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: The ultimate bag for social status whilst you are in the Lidl middle isle, just don’t wear black to the shops as the weave sheds.
Marketed as a ‘sustainable shopping essential’, this bag for life retailed by Fortnum & Masons is a stylish offering that promises a unique practical purpose.
‘100 per cent plastic free, this bag is finished in our distinctive marque logo and the perfect size to hold all of your essentials,’ the website added.
The charming carrier bag may be small in size, but Ms Talbot speaks highly about the favourable design.
She said: ‘Fortnum & Mason’s historic colour palette and heritage branding give its tote an instantly recognisable identity.
‘There is a sense of tradition and craftsmanship associated with the brand, which contributes to its enduring appeal.’
Ms Windsor said: ‘Fortnum & Mason has a long-established association with the Royal Family and, by extension, British tradition, food culture and luxury.
‘Its heritage is part of its appeal, and carrying one of these bags suggests someone who appreciates quality, and the pleasure of shopping for good food!’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: Definitely perfect for the yummy Mummy and wannabe Gwyneth on the school run, wearing Veja trainers and holding an extra white latte.
Combining casual shopping with high-end luxury, this durable cotton canvas tote bag is described as a bag that ‘celebrates American coffee shop style.
‘Crafted from seeded cotton canvas, it is embroidered with our signature logo on the front,’ the listing added.
Launched by the luxury brand on the Spring 2025 runway following an initial preview in the Hamptons, the ‘Ralph Tote’ reflects the brand’s luxury artisanal leather line.
According to Ms Talbot, this bag reflects Ralph Lauren’s ‘classic, understated style’.
She added: ‘Neutral tones, quality materials and subtle branding create a timeless accessory that works effortlessly across different wardrobes.’
Meanwhile, Miss Windsor said this bag is synonymous with a ‘coffee lover’.
She explained: ‘Not too convinced about the large Ralph Lauren logo and doesn’t really make the shopping tote elegant. The bag is off-white/beige, it will also show dirt very quickly.
‘For me, sophistication is about small logos, interesting colours and one that works with your style. Of course, if you are a coffee lover, you’ve found the right bag.’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: Lives in the Cotswolds or Notting Hill, its perfect for the back of the Range Rover for putting spare wellies in or dog towels. Its surprisingly cheap compared to the prices in store.
Daylesford Organic, meanwhile, offers a variety of bags to its shoppers keen to showcase their spending habits at the award-winning farm and store from the Cotswolds.
One content creator, Bailey Marie-Foret, who visited from the States, wrote on TikTok while holding her new tote: ‘Literally one of my favourite tote bags ever.
‘I saw an incredibly chic woman walk out of Daylesford with it in London and I walked right in and bought it.’
Marie-Foret also boasted of the bag’s practical pros, with the size able to fit in all she wishes on an average day.
Ms Talbot, meanwhile, notes that this tote bag ‘reflects a natural, understated aesthetic’.
She added: ‘It resonates with consumers who favour timeless neutrals and a softer, more organic look. The simplicity of the design gives it a quietly elegant feel.’
Ms Windsor added: ‘The Daylesford shopper suggests someone who appreciates the country lifestyle more than the city: It brings to mind organic produce, farmers’ markets, and an abundance of healthy foods. But I am not particularly keen on oversized branding.
‘Why should you have to advertise a company when you are not being paid to do so? A discreet logo can be elegant, but when it dominates the bag, you can look more like a walking advertisement.’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: For the super organised person, functional and ergonomic with a clip so they don’t loose it, its pretty basic in bright colours to find in your bag.
An affordable, compact tote bag available at a range of supermarkets such as Tesco, these lightweight bags are a practical offering perfect for storing in the likelihood of spontaneous errands.
Coming in a variety of colours, the lightweight material makes them a perfect bag on the go.
While Lisa notes that these bags may be seen by some as the less fashionable option compared to other offerings, they manage to combine practicality with wearability.
She added: ‘While they may not have the design details of a dedicated fashion tote, the growing appreciation for reusability means that functionality itself has become part of modern style.
‘How a bag is carried and integrated into someone’s personal style can be just as important as the bag itself.’
Ms Windsor, meanwhile, said: ‘These are purely functional bags, and the question here is whether you want your shopping bag to be part of your overall appearance or whether you simply need something to get your groceries home. Most probably the latter….’
Ms Baxter’s verdict: This is the ultimate ironic shopping bag, if its good enough for Mrs Prada, its good enough for us all. Lidl are known for their bright and graphic branding on clothing and accessories.
In September, Lidl announced the launch of its limited-edition canvas tote bag inspired by the rise in popularity in the US.
Designed to coincide with London Fashion Week, each of the large white and navy canvas bags came with a limited-edition pack that included a Freeway Cola keyring, All Butter Croissant pin and Parkside Drill iron-on patch.
Coming with a zero-pound price tag, these stylish totes were snapped up almost instantly by enthusiastic shoppers.
Ms Talbot adds that this limited-edition tote bag ‘combines affordability with strong design’.
‘A well-executed canvas tote with a simple logo and clean lines can feel current and fun, especially when styled intentionally,’ she said.
According to Ms Windsor, this bag would likely belong to an ‘unassuming shopper’.
She added: ‘No matter how you accessorise it, this roomy, straightforward unassuming shopping bag does the job without pretending to be a luxury accessory.
‘Definitely not the bag to accompany you to a smart lunch or a day out, as the logo is rather prominent and any marks and stains will be immediately visible.’
