Insurance exec fatally shoots wife, daughter before taking his own life inside their NJ mansion, police say

An insurance executive is suspected of fatally shooting his wife and daughter before taking his own life inside their New Jersey mansion.
Montgomery Township Police responded to a welfare check last Thursday at the family’s mansion, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police were initially unable to contact the family, and a day later, they gained access to the home — listed on the real estate marketplace Zillow for more than $1.7 million — and found two women in two separate bedrooms dead from gunshot wounds to the head. Officers also found a man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, prosecutors said.
On Tuesday, the man was identified as David Grodnick, 61, and the women were identified as Grodnick’s 62-year-old wife, Lora Grodnick, and their 24-year-old daughter, Sloane Grodnick.
Grodnick was the senior vice president and underwriting counsel at Land Services USA, a real estate title insurance company, according to a report from The Montgomery News and a LinkedIn page that matches the description.
The Montgomery News first reported the suspected murder-suicide. The Independent has reached out to Land Services USA for comment.
Neighbors reportedly said Grodnick and his wife had been members of the elite Bedens Brook Country Club in their hometown of Skillman.
Solane Grodnick graduated from the private Hun School of Princeton in 2020 and then Savannah College of Art and Design in 2024, according to The Montgomery News and her Instagram. She was set to graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design with a Master of Fine Arts degree next year.
The investigation into the Grodnicks’ deaths remains ongoing.
“The homicide deaths of both Lora and Sloane Grodnick were an isolated incident, and there are no threats to the public from this tragic occurrence,” the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Local officials have asked anyone with information relating to the probe to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100 or the Montgomery Police Department at (908) 359-3222.
