Ukraine-Russia war latest: Russian official says oil refinery hit in ‘massive’ drone attack

Authorities in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region are taking all necessary measures to ensure fuel remains available at petrol stations following a “massive” drone attack that damaged an industrial ‌facility in the ‌region.

Russian investigators opened a criminal case on terrorism charges over a suspected Ukrainian attack on the industrial facility and civilian infrastructure in the Nizhny Novgorod region, governor Gleb Nikitin said.

In a post on Telegram, Nikitin said the “massive” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack resulted in “significant damage” to the facility.

“More than 100 drones have been destroyed,” he wrote. The region is home to the NORSI oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest.

The targeted facility was not named but Ukrainian media reported that a large fire broke out at the Kstovo oil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and local residents reported explosions.

Earlier, the US warned grain and energy shortages are “threatening the world” as it said there is growing international interest in facilitating a temporary ceasefire in the Black Sea.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the administration is reviewing proposals by ‌Turkey and India to get grain shipments moving.
