Evergreen leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been ruled out of England’s one-day international series against Sri Lanka.

The ultra-reliable 38-year-old sustained an injury to his bowling hand when fielding at Emirates Old Trafford on Saturday as England clinched a 3-0 T20 series clean sweep of their Asian rivals.

England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook confirmed the double World Cup winner would miss the ODI series curtain-raiser at the Banks Homes Riverside on Tuesday.

And after undergoing a scan on Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed Rashid will be absent for Thursday’s match at Headingley and Sunday’s game at the Kia Oval owing to a “right hand injury”.

Rashid is second on the list of England’s all-time ODI wicket-takers with 243 – only Sir James Anderson is ahead of him with 269.

His place in the side at Chester-le-Street has gone to his leg-spinning protege Rehan Ahmed.
