Charli is up for two awards at the VMAs including Best Art Direction and Best Pop for her song SS26.
The ceremony is taking place at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. It kicked off at 7.30pm EST and is being hosted by Snoop Dogg.
It began with a raunchy performance by Madonna, which marked her long-awaited return to the awards show, 23 years after she last courted controversy at the ceremony.
Madonna stormed the stage alongside Sabrina Carpenter, performing their hit song Bring Your Love in a black satin outfit paired with sparkly shorts and suspenders.
Afterwards, Charli joined Madonna for a surprise performance of the song Danceteria, as the pair bizarrely danced around the stage set up as a urinal.
Fans were noticeably confused by the performance and accused the singer of lip syncing her track.
