Controversial Philadelphia Eagles star who spat on an opponent lands mammoth $152m pay day

The Philadelphia Eagles have handed defensive tackle Jalen Carter a new four-year contract worth $152 million.

Carter, a Super Bowl champion, becomes the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history with $106m fully guaranteed.

The former first-round NFL Draft pick, 25, caused fury last season when he spat on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott just six seconds into the opening game of the year. The NFL ultimately issued a one-game suspension and fined him $57,222.

Carter’s reputation for dirty play only grew worse towards the end of last season when he appeared to gouge Buffalo Bills right tackle Spencer Brown’s eye during a win in Orchard Park.

With Buffalo in a short-yardage situation deep in Philadelphia territory, Carter not only got Brown’s eye with his right thumb, but also managed to slam his biceps into the Bills star’s throat.

‘Ouch,’ announcer Tom Brady said on the Fox broadcast. ‘He got eye gouged and throat slashed.’

Brown was briefly examined by trainers afterwards, although there was no flag on the play.

Afterwards, Brown was seen jawing with Eagles players and he didn’t hold back with reporters in the locker room, either. Asked if he thought the gouge was an accident, Brown told WGRZ reporter Jonathan Acosta and others: ‘No, I don’t think so, but it was coming I guess.’

Previously he was involved in a fatal car crash while celebrating a national championship at the University of Georgia in January of 2023 when teammate Devin Willock and Bulldogs recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy were both killed.

Police believe LeCroy and Carter were street racing in separate cars when she crashed.

Carter was given one year of probation and fined $1,000 after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing related to the wreck.

Despite this, the 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive standout was still picked ninth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft and later started in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs in February 2025.
